A Kampala-bound bus overturned on Monday outside South Sudanese capital Juba, killing at least 33 people.

"At present, we have 33 bodies in the mortuary, including those of children, and we have identified five to be South Sudanese," Dr. Wani Lolik, director-general of the Juba Teaching Hospital, told Anadolu Agency.

He said the mortuary was not able to accommodate all the bodies.

"There are heaps of bodies lying on the ground," added Lolik. "The [hospital's] refrigerators cannot retain more than 20 bodies."

He said hospital officials were awaiting permission to bury the bodies of deceased South Sudanese, "so that we can replace them with those of foreigners, whose relatives are not nearby to claim them."

Lolik added that four injured people admitted to the hospital were currently in stable condition.

The passenger bus rammed into a stationary trailer at Nesitu, located roughly 25km from Juba.

Mugisha Abdullah, an eyewitness, said the bus had tried to avoid the lorry, but rammed into it and overturned.

"The lorry was stuck in the middle of the road. The bus tried to go to the left, struck it, and overturned," he told AA.

Police have yet to officially comment on the accident.
