12 dead in Chinese fireworks factory blast

BEIJING

An explosion at a fireworks factory in China's south-central Hunan province has claimed the lives of 12 workers while two others remain missing.

State news agency Xinhua reported Tuesday that 33 people -- including three passers-by -- were also wounded in the blast that occurred at around 3 p.m. Monday in Liling City -- a central fireworks production hub.

A total of 47 workers were at the Nanyang Export Fireworks Factory at the time of the explosion.

According to the rescue headquarters, three workers went unharmed and a rescue operation is ongoing.

Of the 33 wounded persons, 26 are receiving treatment at a Liling hospital while four severely injured victims have been transported to nearby Zhuzhou City. Three others with minor wounds have returned home.

The cause behind the blast remains under investigation, and the factory cordoned off.
