DAMASCUS

Alleged attacks by the Syrian regime on opposition-controlled areas have killed 47 people on Thursday, according the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Thirteen people were killed in Aleppo, nine in the suburbs of the capital city Damascus, five in Hama and others in Homs, Raqqah and other towns.

Syria's three-year civil war has become increasingly violent; the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that more than 133,000 people were killed in regime attacks last month.

Militants affiliated with the self-proclaimed Islamic State group, formerly known as ISIL, fired rockets at a major air base in northeastern Syria according to the Syria General Revolutionary Council.

The Islamic State have unilaterally declared a "caliphate" -- rejected by Muslims leaders and scholars -- in the areas they control between Syria and Iraq, driving 1.2 million from their homes and targeting Shiite Muslims, Turkmen, Ezidis and Christians.
