GAZA CITY

Israel will close two cargo terminals with the Gaza Strip for five days – from Friday to next Tuesday – for the Jewish Passover holidays, a Palestinian official said Thursday.

"Israel will shut the Karam Abu Salem and Beit Hanoun border crossings from Friday until Tuesday due to Passover celebrations," Palestinian Authority border chief Nazmi Mehanna told Anadolu Agency.

Jewish Passover celebrations began in Israel on Tuesday and will last for seven days.

Mehanna warned that the closure of the Karam Abu Salem crossing in particular would "paralyze commercial activity" in Gaza.

Home to roughly 1.8 million people, the Gaza Strip has six border crossings with Israel and one with Egypt.

Since Hamas seized control of the strip in 2007, the self-proclaimed Jewish state has closed four of its Gaza crossings, leaving only the Karam Abu Salem and Erez crossings open to limited traffic.
