MELBOURNE, Australia

Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the Australian Open after losing to his Czech opponent Tomas Berdych in the quarter final stage in Melbourne Tuesday.

The 2009 Australian Open champion Nadal was no match for last year's semi-finalist Berdych, who defeated the Spaniad in three straight sets. The Czech player won 6-2, 6-0, and 7-6. Berdych will now play against British Andy Murray or Australian Nick Kyrgios in the semi final match.

Meanwhile, in the women's category, 2008 Australian Open winner and World number two, Maria Sharapova, eased past Canadian Eugenie Bouchard after winning the sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The Russian player qualified for the semis for the seventh time in Australian Open history.

In the semifinals, Sharapova will meet her fellow citizen Ekaterina Makarova, who eliminated World number three Simona Halep.
