Football: Argentina takes revenge against Germany

DUSSELDORF, Germany

The German National Football team, winners of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, was stunned Wednesday night by runners-up Argentina 4-2 in a friendly match at Dusseldrof Esprit Arena.

Argentina, the away team, took the lead against Germany after Manchester City star Sergio Aguero's goal in the 20th minute. Before the first half ended, Argentine forward Erik Manuel Lamela doubled the margin to 2-0.

Argentina made a flying start in the second half as Federico Fernandez scored the third goal in the 47th minute, to make the score 3-0. Three minutes later Manchester United's recent arrival from Real Madrid, Angel Di Maria found the net, and the score was 4-0.

Germany narrowed the gap to three after Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle put the ball in the back of the net in the 52nd minute, making the score 4-1.

In the 76th minute, Borussia Dortmund's star Marco Reus' shot rattled the crossbar. Two minutes later Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Mario Gotze converted a penalty successfully, decreasing the margin to 4-2, which wound up being the final score.

Argentina took revenge for 2014 FIFA World Cup final while Germany suffered their first loss after getting crowned July 13 as winners of the World Cup.

Before the game, Per Mertesacker, Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose, who retired from international duty after the World Cup, were each given plaques.

Borussia Dortmund's German international Ilkay Gundogan watched the game from the stands.
