Abandoned bombs explode, kill 63 in Nigeria

BAUCHI, Nigeria

At least 63 people were killed in Nigeria when home-made bombs in a disused Boko Haram camp detonated in northeast Nigeria Wednesday, sources said.

According to local self-defense fighters, many abandoned hand-made bombs allegedly belonging to Boko Haram exploded when local residents living in the northeastern town of Monguno discovered and explored the former Boko Haram camp.

Nigeria has battled a six-year Boko Haram insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over a million people.

Almost a year after Boko Haram seized towns across the northeast region, the Nigerian army -- backed by regional troops from Chad and Niger -- has pushed the group out of most of the territories they captured earlier.
