ISTANBUL

 A major citywide police operation has seen almost 170 people detained in Istanbul, security forces said on Saturday.

The operation, named ‘Yeditepe Huzur’, was conducted between 7 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday local time (1700 and 2300 GMT) all across Turkey’s largest city.

Police say they stopped and searched over 26,300 people during this period.

During the operation carried out in 39 districts of the city, officers seized 26 unregistered firearms, 247 grams of heroin and 3,100 ecstasy tablets.

Police displayed firearms, ammunition and illegal cigarettes seized during the operation carried out by counter-terrorism, narcotics, financial and organized crime officers.

Over 110 cars out of nearly of 6,300 vehicles stopped were taken off the road, while 36 bars and off-licenses out of just over of 570 premises searched were shut down.

Just over 220,850 Turkish liras' worth ($75,518) of penalties were issued to drivers and shop owners.
