Five arrested in probe involving Turkey's top scientific body

ANKARA

 An Ankara court ruled Wednesday for the arrest of five people in an alleged "illegal recruitment and collection of money for a terror organization" probe at the country's top scientific body, known as TUBITAK. 

Earlier, 17 out of 28 suspects were detained in a police operation launched in Ankara, Istanbul, Kocaeli, Bursa and Canakkale provinces on abuse of power charges. 

Of them, three suspects were freed at the Ankara police department, six were freed following their proceedings at the prosecution's office and another three, who were accused of "damaging public commodity," were later freed with the provision of judicial control. 

The 28 suspects worked for the Marmara Research Center (MAM), which is linked to TUBITAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
