2 soldiers injured in attack in southeast Turkey

SIRNAK, Turkey

At least two soldiers have been injured in an attack on a police vehicle in Turkey’s southeastern province of Sirnak on Monday, local security sources said.

According to the local security sources, suspected members of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) organized an armed attack on a police vehicle carrying soldiers.

Security forces have launched an operation to apprehend the attackers. The wounded were taken to Sirnak Military Hospital.

Meanwhile, at least seven members of PKK and the affiliated Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) had surrendered to security sources in Sirnak, according to a statement from the Sirnak governorship.

Operations against the PKK – listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the EU and U.S. – came after it renewed attacks on Turkish security forces following the July 20 Suruc bombing that killed dozens of people.

The fighting between the PKK and the security forces had seen a fragile lull for a two-and-a-half year period from early 2013 in what is publicly known as the "solution process" in an attempt to end the 40-year conflict.
