Turkey: Two civilians dead, several injured in east

SIRNAK, Turkey

Two civilians were killed and several others, including members of security forces, were injured in attacks blamed on Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) members in eastern Turkey on Thursday, local officials said.

A woman was killed when “terrorists” opened fire on a car in Turkey's northeastern Erzincan province, provincial Governor Suleyman Kahraman told Anadolu Agency.

According to Kahraman, the attack took place on the Erzincan-Kemah Highway at around 4.30 p.m., local time (1330GMT). The highway had been blocked by armed men, who also allegedly set ablaze two cars.

According to security forces, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, PKK members also attacked Cizre Garrison Command in southeastern Sirnak province.

A clash broke out following the attack that killed a civilian and injured seven passersby as well as three soldiers.

The militants had attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and long-barreled weapons, security sources said.

Early Thursday morning, PKK members also held an attack against the Hizan District Gendarme Command, in the eastern province of Bitlis, security officials who could not give their name said.

Four soldiers were wounded, including one in critical condition, and six PKK members were killed in the clash that erupted after the soldiers responded to the attack.

In the Kigi district of the eastern province of Bingol on Thursday, PKK members targeted employees of a hydroelectric power plant under construction and soldiers guarding it.

At least three workers were injured at the attack. The assailants fled, according to security sources.

In a separate incident that took place in the eastern province of Van, PKK members attacked an armored vehicle in the Edremit district with rocket-propelled grenades.

Two policemen were injured and the security forces launched an investigation to find the perpetrators.

In addition, one more policeman was injured as PKK members targeted a minibus carrying policemen posted at the Dilucu border gate in the eastern Igdir province, which borders Armenia.

More than 60 security personnel have been martyred, reportedly by the PKK, as tensions in the southeastern region of Turkey have flared up since a bombing linked to Daesh on July 20 in Suruc, which claimed the lives of 34 people.
