Turkey: Wounded opposition MP candidate discharged from hospital

ADANA, Turkey

The MP candidate for Turkey’s opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Elif Dogan Turkmen, who was shot and wounded in Turkey's southern province of Adana earlier on Tuesday, was discharged from the hospital.

The 53-year-old lawyer declined to answer reporters' questions.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency earlier, the Adana governor Mustafa Buyuk said Turkmen had been on her way to a breakfast event in the Cukurova district when she was shot.

"Elif Dogan Turkmen was shot in the knees, but her life is not at risk," said the governor.

"The armed attack on the CHP candidate Turkmen was not political, but rather was the result of a lawyer-client dispute," he added.

A man named "Ali Fuat E." is a suspect in the attack, the governor said.

The governor also said that the rental car used for the armed attack had been found.

This is the second time in four days Adana has witnessed an attack on a parliamentary candidate. On Saturday, ruling AK Party's MP candidate Ramazan Demir was injured in a knife attack perpetrated by two individuals.

About 56 million Turks will vote in the country's 25th general election to elect 550 lawmakers to the Turkish Grand National Assembly on June 7.
