Thirty thousand to attend Turkey's AK Party Congress

ANKARA 

Thirty thousand people including party representatives from around the country and representatives of civil societies and foreign political parties will attend the First Extraordinary Congress of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party to be held on August 27.

A new chairman and prime minister of the party will be elected in the congress to replace Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who will be sworn in as the 12th President of the Republic of Turkey on August 28.

About one thousand local and foreign journalists are expected to cover the proceedings of the congress.

"Very important discussions will probably take place in the congress as regards to decisions and the steps of the new Turkey," said AK Party's Deputy Chairman Suleyman Soylu. "A party chairman and prime minister will be elected in this congress by the will of AK Party delegation. This congress is one of the important and serious steps in Turkey's march towards 2023."

Preparations are underway in the AK Party for the extraordinary congress to be held at Ankara Arena.

In a statement to AA reporter, Soylu said that it would be one of the most important congresses in the political memory of the country.

AK Party has been single-handedly ruling the country since 2002 and has won all elections and referendums so far under the leadership of Erdogan.

Erdogan will take over charge of his office from President Abdullah Gul.

Turkey's Supreme Election Board has announced the confirmed results of August 10 presidential election.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan took 51.79 percent of the vote while Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu received 38.44 percent. Selahattin Demirtas had 9.76 percent.
