Syrian shell hits tractor in Turkey, two injured

HATAY, Turkey

Two people were injured in Turkey's south after a cannon ball hit their tractor trailer on Sunday in the Yayladagi region, close to the Syrian border.

The Governorship of Hatay Province said in a statement that the shell dropped at GMT 9.45 a.m. on a countryside nearly 200 meters away from the Syrian-Turkish border.

The two injured Turks, - identified only by the initials M.T and  A.O. - were taken under treatment at the Antakya State Hospital, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the governor's office announced that Turkish troops near the border retaliated by firing shells back to the Syrian side.

Incidents like this are not rare in Turkey's provinces along the Syrian border. The two countries share a more than 800 km long frontier.

Syria is gripped by a deadly civil war which has claimed more than 100,000 lives according to the latest updated tally by the UN.

The UN stopped updating tally after an official count became too difficult to ascertain.
