Spokespeople of White House and State Department renewed the calls for Turkish government to handle this issue with respect to the rights of its citizens

US renews call for full investigation for Gezi park protests

US State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said that the US believed that the most of the protestors were peaceful and law-abiding people who expressed their rights.

Speaking at the daily press conference, White House Spokesman Jay Carney and State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki replied the journalists' questions about the Gezi Park protests in Turkey.

Carney said the US followed the events closely and supported peaceful demonstration rights, adding that they were a must for democracy. 

Carney added, "Turkey is a very important ally. All democracies have some issues to handle. We expect the Turkish government to handle this issue with respect to the rights of its citizens."

Touching upon the effects of the events to the cooperation between Turkey and the US on Syrian crisis, Carney said the two allies would continue to work together as they believed that Turkish government would handle the issue in the most appropiate way.

"Turkey has a democratically elected government"

Psaki, on the other hand said, the US supported freedom of expression and peaceful gathering, adding, Turkey had a democratically elected government. 

Psaki said the US believed that the most of the protestors were peaceful and law-abiding people who expressed their rights,and called on Turkish government to carry out a full and transparent investigation, expressing the US concern over the news about excessive use of force by the police, as well as the existence of large number of injured people and damaged properties.

As a response to a question regarding Syrian regime's call to its public to not go to Turkey, Psaki said, "I would prefer to be in Istanbul instead of Damascus."
