ANKARA

A 46-year-old man was arrested Sunday in connection with the recent murder of a Syrian-born imam in London, police said in a statement online Monday.

The suspect was arrested in Brent on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and remains in custody.

Abdul Hadi Arwani was a preacher at the An-Noor Mosque in Acton, West London, and a known critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian-born British national was murdered on April 7.

Arwani is thought to have died from gunshot wounds; however, an official cause of death is yet to be determined by the Coroner.

The investigation into Arwani’s death is being led by detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command “because of their expertise in the management of investigations with international dimensions and an established liaison network abroad,” the statement added.

British police said that they remained “open-minded about the motive” behind Arwani’s murder.
