Fernando Santos has been named as the new head coach of the Portugal National Football Team after the dismissal of Paulo Bento.

A statement made on the website of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Tuesday announced that Santos, who managed Greece in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had been appointed to the position.

The 59-year-old made Greece advance to the quarter final in Euro 2012 and Round of 16 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

During his career, he also managed several clubs such as Estoril, Estrela da Amadora, Porto, AEK, Panathinaikos, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and PAOK.

On September 11, former "Seleção A" (The Selection) head coach Bento quit his job after a mutual termination.

Having recently lost to Albania 1-0 in the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying Group I match played in Aveiro on September 7, Portugal were harshly criticized.

Following a poor performance during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Portugal National Football Team have been eliminated in group stages of the tournament.
