Boxing: Mayweather lines up 49th win to equal record

Undefeated world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather will fight Andre Berto next month as he seeks to equal Rocky Marciano’s 49-bout undefeated record, he announced on Tuesday.

Mayweather, 38, who holds the WBA and WBC titles but had to give up his WBO belt last month, will face fellow American Berto on Sept. 12 in Las Vegas. He is expected to retire if he wins the match.

“September 12, 2015 for number 49. Come be part of the history. Book your hotel and flights now,” Mayweather tweeted.

Mayweather defeated the Philippines’ Manny Pacquiao to take the WBO title in May and secure all three welterweight belts but had to relinquish the title over his failure to pay an administration fee to fight organizers.

Berto, 31, has lost three of his last six bouts - two of them to opponents Mayweather has already defeated. Last month his trainer and father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., said his son wanted “a couple of easy fights” to end his career.
