Erdogan: Turkey should move to 5G technology in 2 years

ANKARA

Turkey should skip 4G internet technology and move directly to 5G instead, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

Speaking at an event marking the 175th anniversary of Turkish telecommunications company Turk Telekom in Ankara on Tuesday, Erdogan said: "The world is talking about 5G tech right now. We are still at 3G."

"We would waste time with 4G technology and should move to 5G in two years, or else Turkey becomes a garbage dump for 4G technology."

Congratulating Turk Telekoms' 34,000 workers on the company's anniversary, Erdogan said Turk Telekom was "the main reason behind Turkey's telecommunication breakthrough" adding the company set an "important" example.

Formerly Turkish Post, Turk Telekom, was separated from the institution in 1995 and privatized in 2005.
