A ship carrying 10 tons of hashish has been raided by the Italian coastguard acting on a tip-off from Turkish police.
The Meryem – a Turkish-flagged vessel – was intercepted by Italian officers on Friday as it was sailing through the Sicilian Strait which divides the Mediterranean Sea.
Turkish police informed the foreign ministry which immediately shared the information with their Italian counterparts.
The ship, which is believed to have set out from Morocco, was heading towards Europe.
Ten Turkish citizens – all crewmembers – were detained, the police said.
