Suspects in Turkey's MIT trucks case to remain in jail

ANKARA

Four public prosecutors and a Gendarme officer accused of involvement in the MIT trucks case will remain in custody, Turkey's Supreme Court ruled on Friday.

The case centers on the search of trucks belonging to Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) in two separate incidents in January last year. The vehicles were allegedly laden with arms and ammunition bound for Syrian opposition groups.

The defendants - Suleyman Bagriyanik, Ozcan Sisman, Aziz Takci, Ahmet Karaca and Ozkan Cokay - were arrested in May.

They are accused of violating national security and attempting to overthrow the government by conducting the searches in southern Adana and Hatay provinces. Last month, the prosecutor overseeing the case in nearby Mersin province called for life sentences for the defendants.

When details of the searches first emerged, the Interior Ministry stated the trucks had been transporting humanitarian aid to Syria’s Turkmen community.

Friday's hearing was held at the request of defense lawyers.
