42 killed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula since Morsi's ouster

ARISH (AA) – At least 42 people, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in a spate of militant attacks in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula since July 5, two days after the army ousted elected President Mohamed Morsi, according to a tally compiled by Anadolu Agency.

One soldier was killed and another one wounded on Thursday in an attack by gunmen on a security checkpoint in the North Sinai city of Arish.

On Tuesday, another soldier died of injuries sustained in an attack on a military facility in Arish.

Three policemen were also killed in separate militant attacks in Sinai one day earlier.

Two civilians were killed and three army personnel injured on July 26 after militants attacked security checkpoints in Sheikh Zuweid in North Sinai.

Two soldiers were also killed when gunmen stormed a border guard headquarters in North Sinai on July 25.

On July 24, one soldier was killed by a gunshot to the chest while manning a security checkpoint in Arish.

One policeman was killed and a civilian injured on July 22, when unknown gunmen attacked several security and military facilities in Sinai.

On the same day, a civilian was killed and four army personnel killed in attacks on security checkpoints in Rafah and Arish.

On July 21, two civilians and a soldier were killed in attacks targeting 12 security checkpoints in Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid.

A soldier succumbed to his injuries after having been shot outside a government building on the same day.

In two other attacks on July 21, a police officer was gunned down outside an Arish police station, while another was killed outside the North Sinai Radio building.

On July 19, three civilians were killed when an RPG attack targeting army troops in Arish missed its target and hit a nearby residential area.

Two policemen died on July 18 of wounds sustained in an attack by unidentified gunmen.

On the same day, a civilian was shot in Al-Goura village on the southern outskirts of Sheikh Zuweid city after failing to stop at a security checkpoint.

Two policemen were killed in a July 17 attack by gunmen in Arish.

Three people were killed and 15 injured when militants missed a security vehicle and instead hit a civilian vehicle south of Arish on July 15.

On the same day, one person was killed and a child wounded in a shootout between security forces and militants in the city of Hasana.

On July 12, unknown militants gunned down a police officer and injured one soldier in an attack on a police checkpoint in Arish.

The dead body of a Christian man abducted four days earlier was found on July 11 in Sheikh Zuweid City.

On the same day, unidentified militants killed a police officer near the Egypt-Israel border.

Also on July 11, security sources said that a joint army/police patrol had opened fire on a vehicle that had failed to stop at a checkpoint on the Arish-Rafah road, killing a child passenger and injuring the driver.

On July 10, two civilians were killed and seven others – including three soldiers – were injured in an attack on a security checkpoint in central Sinai.

Unknown assailants stabbed a police officer in Arish on July 8, seriously injuring him before fleeing the scene.

On July 7, a soldier was killed in an attack on a security checkpoint in central Arish.  Two police officers were wounded when gunmen opened fire on them in the same city.

Also in Arish, an officer was injured in an attack on a local firefighting department. Another soldier sustained injuries in a militant attack on an Arish security checkpoint.

One day earlier, a Christian clergyman was gunned down by militants near a church in Arish.

On July 5, also in Arish, a police officer was killed by unknown militants. Two other police officers were killed the same day in a drive-by shooting in the same city.

Another soldier was killed and six others injured in a July 5 attack on an army camp in Sheikh Zuweid City.
