Police will not back down against 'marginal groups'

Istanbul governor on Tuesday said police forces will not back down against "marginal groups" at Istanbul's central Taksim Square as riot police fired tear gas and water cannon on protesters Tuesday night in the 15th day of demonstrations which began as peaceful protests against a development project at the Gezi Park.

"From this moment on, the unshakeable power of our state and our nation will be shown on marginal groups by our police forces with commitment," Huseyin Mutlu told a press conference.

Mutlu urged people not to come to Taksim until "security is fully maintained in the square."
