ANKARA

  The ruling center-right alliance, Portugal Ahead (PaF), has won the general election but it has failed to secure enough seats to form a majority in the parliament, unofficial results revealed Monday.

According to results posted at the “legislativas2015.pt” website, the alliance PaF, which was formed by the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Democratic and Social Centre – People's Party (CDS-PP), gained 99 deputies in the 230-seat parliament with 36.9 percent of votes.

Portugal Prime Minister and PSD chairman Pedro Passos Coelho said: “It would be weird to win the election and not be able to form a government. We will tell the president that we are ready to form the government”.

Meanwhile, CDS-PP chair Paulo Portas said that they would not immediately attempt to form a government with leftist parties and try to do it as the coalition PaF.

Socialist Party (PS) gained 85 seats in the parliament with 32.4 percent of votes. Party head Antonio Costa said: “Government cannot be formed without majority. PaF coalition should take into consideration that there is a new reality in the parliament.” He further said that he would not resign despite the demand from some party members and the Portugal media.

The Left Bloc (BE) secured 19 seats in the parliament. CDU, Democratic Unitarian Coalition which is a coalition by Portuguese Communist Party and Ecological Party (The Greens) secured 17 seats, the website added.
