Opposition says Erdogan siding with ruling AK Party

CANKIRI, Turkey

The leader of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party questioned President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s impartially as president on Wednesday.

“Despite being president, Erdogan is engaged in politics as if he is the AK Party's co-chairman,” Devlet Bahceli said during his party's rally in Cankiri province.

The issue of a potential presidential system has been a hot topic in Turkey for the past few months, as the country approaches parliamentary elections on June 7, 2015.

A constitutional amendment or a new constitution would be needed to set up a presidential system in the country.

Turkey’s current constitution was drafted two years after a military takeover in 1980 and numerous amendments have been made to it since then.
