French President Francois Hollande arrived Monday in Doha on a state visit, during which he would attended the signing ceremony of an agreement on the purchase of French Rafale fighter jets by the Qatari army.

Hollande was welcomed at Hamad International Airport by Qatari Culture Minister Hamad bin Abdel-Aziz al-Kuwari, state QNA news agency reported.

The French leader is due to meet later in the day with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the agency reported, noting that the talks would tackle bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Hollane would then attended the signing of the agreement that would see Qatar buying 24 Rafale fighter jets at 6.3 billion euros ($7 billion).

The French presidency said late last month that Sheikh Tamim had asked for the acquisition during a recent visit to the French capital.

Qatar is now the third international buyer of the French military aircraft. The Gulf state already owns 12 Mirage 2000, a former French combat aircraft.

Hollande is expected to fly later to Saudi Arabia where he would attend a summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as the guest of honor on Tuesday.
