UN envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar on Monday reiterated his rejection to the house arrest imposed on resigned-Premier Khaled Bahah and several members of his cabinet by the Shiite Houthi group.

In a statement, Benomar expressed his utmost rejection to the Houthi-imposed house arrests on several members of the resigned government, stressing they need to be lifted quickly, without any preconditions.

Benomar met Sunday with Bahah and his Foreign Minister Abdullah al-Sayadi separately in their respective homes in capital Sanaa, where they're under house arrest by Houthis.

For more than a month, Bahah and members of his cabinet have been subject to house arrests in their respective homes in Sanaa by the Houthis.

Yemen has remained in a state of chaos since last September, when the Shiite Houthi militant group took over capital Sanaa, from which it has since sought to extend its control to other parts of the country as well.

On Feb. 21, President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi fled Sanaa – where he had been placed under house arrest by the Houthis for weeks – to the southern city of Aden.

Upon his arrival in Aden, Hadi dismissed as "null" and "illegitimate" all recently-issued Houthi decrees. He also wrote to Yemen's parliament, withdrawing a resignation he had tendered earlier.

Earlier, the Houthis issued what it described as a constitutional declaration, dissolving parliament and establishing a 551-member transitional council.

The declaration, however, was rejected by most of Yemen's political forces – along with some neighboring Gulf countries – which described it as a coup against constitutional legitimacy.
