Ennahda says to vote against new Tunisia cabinet lineup

TUNIS

Tunisia's Islamist movement Ennahda, which holds the second largest number of seats in parliament, said on Sunday that it would vote against the new cabinet formed by Prime Minister-designate Habib Essid.

"The cabinet does not live up to the minimum standards of national unity," Fathi al-Ayyadi, the head of Ennahda's Shura Council – the movement's highest decision-making body – told a press conference in Tunis on Sunday.

"There was no mention of social justice or serious economic policies," al-Ayyadi added.

He said what he described as "exclusionary policies" should not exist in post-revolution Tunisia.

Two days ago, Essid announced the lineup of his cabinet, which includes 24 government ministers and 15 state secretaries.

He said that his government was "for all Tunisians."

Earlier this month, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi officially tasked Essid with forming a government.

The new government lineup has yet to be presented to parliament for approval.

With 86 out of 217 seats in parliament, Essebsi's Nidaa Tounes party has the right to form the government, being the political party with the highest number of seats in Tunisia's legislature.

The Islamist Ennahda party came in second, with 69 seats.
