Chapter 23 Working Group meeting
Turkish Minister of Justice Sadullah Ergin has said, "the draft law which foresees resolution of the cases that have been waiting at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) through commission has been presented to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his approval. We have stated that cabinet ministers have all signed it."
Ergin, Turkish Minister of EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis and European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Stefan Fule held a press conference in Turkish Ministry of Justice in Ankara on Thursday. The news conference was held in order to discuss the Chapter 23 Working Group's studies and the 'Positive Agenda'.
Turkey and the European Union officially launched Thursday the 'Positive Agenda' process aiming at revitalizing Turkey's stalled accession talks.
Within the scope of the initiative, working groups have been created to carry out technical studies on eight chapters in a bid to accelerate the process of Turkey's alignment with EU policies and standards.
The first working group initiated its studies on Thursday on Chapter 23, 'judiciary and fundamental rights'.
Ergin stated that they held talks with the European Commission, Turkish Ministry of EU Affairs, high judicial organs and the representatives of the Ministry of Justice in order to discuss the 'judiciary and fundamental rights'.
Ergin said that they would be completing their works in order to open the Chapter 23 to negotiations as soon as they could.
