Eight people, including two children, were killed and four others were injured in a fire incident in Paris early Wednesday morning, the French Interior Ministry said.

Paris prosecutors launched a criminal probe to determine the cause of the blaze in northern 18th district.

According to ministry spokesperson Pierre-Henry Brandet, the fire broke out early morning on the ground floor of a building before spreading into the stairwell. It took 100 firefighters around three hours to contain the fire.

The eight victims included two who died after they attempted to escape through the building’s windows.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo who came to the scene with French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that the fire was "one of the worst in the capital during the last 10 years".

She added that around 15 buildings in the working-class area of the district had been affected by the inferno.

Cazeneuve said that the injured were in a critical condition.
