A young Palestinian man was seriously injured on Monday by Israeli gunfire after clashes broke out near the Zatara checkpoint in the southern West Bank city of Nablus, according to eyewitnesses.

“Israeli troops shot a young Palestinian man at the checkpoint on the pretext that he failed to comply with their orders,” witnesses told Anadolu Agency.

The injured man, they added, was arrested afterward and taken to an unknown location.

Tension has run high in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since the murder last week of a Palestinian infant by suspected Jewish extremists.

Ali Saeed Dawabsheh, an 18-month-old Palestinian child, was burned to death on Friday after Jewish extremists torched his home in the West Bank village of Duma.
