Turkish Airlines plane lands in India after bomb threat

ISTANBUL

A Turkish Airlines flight en route from Bangkok to Istanbul was diverted to the Indian capital of New Delhi Tuesday after it received a bomb threat over Indian airspace, the airline confirmed.

Turkish Airlines said that the flight TK-65 departed from the Thai capital of Bangkok with 134 passengers as scheduled but it was forced to divert to New Delhi after a note saying 'bomb' was found in the plane's toilet.

According to the Indian daily Hindustan Times, the words ‘bomb in cargo hold’ was found scribbled on the mirror in one of the toilets of the A330 aircraft. The pilot of the aircraft then requested the Indian Air Traffic Control for an emergency landing.

In its official statement, Turkish Airline said: “All of our passengers and cabin crew have been evacuated safely and taken to the [Indian airport] terminal building”.

“After completing all necessary safety checks the plane will continue its journey to Bangkok,” it added.

The Hindustan Times said that Indian aviation authorities announced at a press conference Tuesday that no explosives were detected aboard the aircraft. Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju was quoted as saying that the flight was now expected to take off from the Indira Gandhi International Airport by 7.30 p.m., local Indian time.

The daily added that apart from a thorough check of the baggage, Indian intelligence and security officials also questioned the passengers about the incident.
