US, Cuba to announce historic embassies reopening

WASHINGTON

The U.S. and Cuba will announce the reopening of embassies in their respective capitals Wednesday, U.S. officials told American media.

"We will formally announce tomorrow that the United States and Cuba have reached an agreement to re-establish formal diplomatic relations and open embassies in each other's capitals," a senior U.S. administration official told CNN. "We expect President [Barack] Obama and Secretary [of State John] Kerry to address this publicly tomorrow morning."

The announcement will seal the initiative to mend diplomatic ties between the two Cold War foes that was launched last December.

Three rounds of high-level talks have been held between the two states that resulted in the U.S. loosening some travel restrictions to Cuba and allowing some new economic relations to develop.

In April, Obama met with Cuban President Raul Castro during a regional summit meeting in Panama. It was followed by the removal of Cuba from a U.S. terror list in May.
