PARIS

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) voted on Friday to increase the number of seats allocated to Turkey from 12 to 18 “in accordance with its increased population.”

The PACE Standing Committee met in Sarajevo, ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina's six-month chairmanship of the Council of Europe.

The Turkish delegation to the assembly would now become the same size as those of France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom.

When Turkish becomes one of the working languages, oral transcriptions will immediately be translated into Turkish and the cost will be paid from the assembly’s budget.

The Standing Committee also said it supports the introduction of Turkish as a working language “if it receives additional funds in its budget to cover the extra cost.”

Italian, Russian and German are used at the assembly, in addition to the official languages of English and French.

Turkey has been a full member of the Council of Europe since 1949.
