IDLIB, Syria

At least 40 people have been wounded by a 'chlorine gas' bomb after Bashar Al-Assad's army launched an attack in Syria's northwestern city of Idlib, opposition forces said.

The Syrian Revolution General Commission said in a statement on Saturday that a bomb containing "chlorine gas" had exploded in the Serakib neighborhood in Idlib, affecting over 40 people including women and children.

According to the Syrian Revolution General Commission, the bomb containing “chlorine gas” was dropped by a military helicopter belonging to Assad’s army.

"The 40 people affected by the chlorine gas were immediately brought to a nearby hospital for treatment," the statement said.

Meanwhile, on Saturday in Aleppo, some 15 armed rebels groups in Syria merged with the People's Defense Units (YPG) to launch joint attacks against regime forces.

According to a joint statement issued on Saturday by the armed groups, they merged because of numerous "violations and excessive" attacks from the Syrian regime. They aim to protect their people against future attacks, the statement said.

Earlier on Thursday, the Syrian Revolution General Commission also said in a statement that Assad's army had continued to use chemical weapons on the people despite its ban. Meanwhile, Bashar Al-Assad has always rejected the accusations that his forces use chemical weapons.

Aleppo and Idlib have been the scene of numerous clashes between opposition forces and the Syrian regime.

In March, the Syrian General Revolution said "revolutionaries" had completely seized control of the city of Idlib in northwestern Syria.
