Swedish Supreme Court to hear Assange appeal

BRUSSELS

Sweden's Supreme Court said on Tuesday it would hear WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s legal appeal to lift the arrest warrant against him over 2010 sexual assault allegations.

The court's decision comes after the Australian-born hacker agreed in April to be questioned in London over the charges.

Assange denies accusations against him of rape and molestation, saying the sexual encounters - in 2010 - with the two women was consensual.

Swedish prosecutors had previously demanded that Assange come to Sweden for questioning about the allegations, but they offered in March to question him in London instead.

Assange took refuge inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London on June 19, 2012, in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden. Ecuador granted Assange political asylum in 2012, despite pressure from Britain.

Assange feared the Scandinavian country would extradite him to the U.S. for releasing thousands of highly-confidential documents on WikiLeaks.
