Syria: Blast at intelligence HQ kills 50 regime troops

ALEPPO, Syria

At least 50 regime troops were killed when a bomb placed in a tunnel near the Syrian Air Force Intelligence's headquarters in Aleppo was detonated, activists said Wednesday.

"For the past three months, rebel groups have been digging a tunnel under the headquarters in the western district of Jamiat al-Zahra," local activist Abu Firas al-Halebi told The Anadolu Agency.

Halebi said that the rebel groups included, among others, the Nusra Front, Muhajireen Army, Levant Front, and the 1st Artillery Regiment.

"Heavy clashes broke out after the explosion Wednesday afternoon, which caused a large partial collapse," he added.

The Syrian Revolution General Commission, a coalition of opposition groups, said that dozens of regime troops were killed in the attack, which was followed by fierce clashes between Assad forces and rebels.

Activists said that regime forces used the intelligence facility as a "center of torture" for prisoners.
