Libyan PM wraps up 3-day Egypt visit

CAIRO

Abdullah al-Thinni, prime minister of Libya's internationally-recognized government, left Egypt on Friday following a three-day visit.

On Thursday, al-Thinni met with Egyptian counterpart Ibrahim Mahlab to discuss the latest developments in crisis-hit Libya, a Libyan diplomatic source told The Anadolu Agency.

The Libyan PM also offered his condolences for the recent death of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya at the hands of Daesh militants, the source said.

"Daesh" is the Arabic acronym for the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and Levant" (ISIL) militant group, which last year overran vast swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

In mid-February, Egypt carried out airstrikes against suspected Daesh targets in the eastern Libyan city of Darnah after a video appeared online purportedly showing the execution of the 21 Egyptian Christians.

Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

Since then, the country's sharp political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each of which has its own institutions.

Vying for legislative authority are the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Islamist-led General National Congress, which – even though its mandate ended last year – continues to convene in capital Tripoli.

The two assemblies support two different governments, respectively headquartered in the two cities.

Egypt, for its part, recognizes al-Thinni's government, which is associated with Libya's Tobruk-based parliament.

Both governments are capable of fielding substantial military forces.
