The head of the UN and the Security Council on Friday condemned a string of deadly attacks in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula that left dozens dead.

Militants carried out a spate of attacks Thursday on military facilities and personnel in the northeastern quadrant of the peninsula, killing at least 26 people, mostly soldiers, and injuring 45 others.

"[Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon] conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and expresses his solidarity with the people of Egypt," a UN spokesperson said in a statement.

Responsibility for the attacks was claimed early Friday by the Welayat Sinai militant group, which acquired its name after reportedly swearing allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, or ISIL.

The group was formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

In a statement, the Security Council also "condemned in the strongest terms" the attacks, urging authorities "to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of this terrorist attack to justice."
