At least 36 people have been rescued from a trawler that sank off the coast of Bangladesh on Thursday.

The local Kutubdia police confirmed that many are still missing from the boat, which is thought to have been carrying up to100 people.

The rescued told Bangladesh Coast Guard that the boat was smuggling migrants to Malaysia, reported local news website bdnews24.

A coast guard rescue vessel is headed to the site from Bangladesh's main port in the city of Chittagong.

Boats travelling migrants seeking work in Malaysia and Thailand are frequently stopped by Bangladesh authorities, including in November when 600 were captured in the Bay of Bengal.
