Nearly 56 percent of registered voters had cast their ballots in the second round of Tunisia's presidential elections inside Tunisia, the country's independent election commission said.

It added that outside Tunisia, between 25 and 26 percent of registered expatriates had cast their votes in the presidential runoff election.

Around 64 percent of Tunisia's 5.3 million registered voters cast their votes in the first round of the presidential elections in November.

Polling stations across Tunisia opened their doors at 8:00am, while the runoff poll came to an end at 6:00pm.

The runoff poll was the final round of the country's first democratic presidential vote.

Incumbent President Moncef Marzouki and the head of the Nidaa Tounes movement Beji Caid Essebsi were vying for the top post in the North African country.

The first round – in which 27 candidates competed – saw Essebsi winning some 1.9 million votes (39.4 percent) and Marzouki roughly 1.1 million votes (33.4 percent).
