WASHINGTON

President Barack Obama on Thursday appointed a task force that will look for ways to improve the relationship between police and minority communities.

"The task force will examine, among other issues, how to strengthen public trust and foster strong relationships between local law enforcement and the communities that they protect, while also promoting effective crime reduction," according to a White House statement.

The group will listen to and review cases, and track their updates, including public comments. The first session will be held in Washington mid-January with recommendations will be submitted to Obama by early March.

The task force will be headed by Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Laurie Robinson, a law professor at George Mason University. It also includes other officials from law enforcement, academia, civil rights organizations and youth leaders.

Obama initially announced the formation of the task force on Dec. 1, after protest erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City after separate grand juries declined to bring charges against white police officers in the deaths of unarmed black men.
