KABUL, Afghanistan

Afghan security forces killed at least 35 suspected militants and wounded 28 others in anti-Taliban operations conducted across the country within the last 24 hours, the Afghan Interior Ministry said Saturday.

The ministry said that around 22 roadside bombs were also defused.

The operations were carried out in Kunar, Nangarhar, Zabul, Khost, Helmand, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Kunduz, Baghlan and Takhar provinces.

The Taliban said they killed 19 Afghan security personnel in clashes in eastern Nuristan province.

Violence has spiked in Afghanistan in recent months as most foreign troops prepare to leave the country by the end of 2014.
