At least 45 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants have been killed and 26 injured over 24 hours in airstrikes by U.S.-led coalition air forces in Iraq, according to health workers.

At least 17 militants were killed and 26 injured in Iraq's northern Nineveh Province, Velid Jasim, a doctor at the Al-Jumhuri hospital in Mosul, told Anadolu Agency on Sunday.

Other sources told AA that 28 militants were killed in similar airstrikes in Iraq's eastern Baqubah district of Diyala province bordering Iran.

Armed groups led by ISIL militants have captured several cities of Iraq, including Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, which was seized in June.

The U.S.-led coalition continues to launch airstrikes against ISIL in the region.

According to the U.N., at least 24,015 civilians have been killed or injured in Iraq during the first eight months of 2014.

The ISIL violence has led to 1.2 million Iraqis, including Turkmen, Arabs, Christians and Ezidis, fleeing their homes.
