PARIS

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a resolution to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, to establish peace and stability in conflict regions.

The PACE, in Thursday’s session, called for member countries to stand up against the rise of ISIL violence and to support the Iraqi government in its fight against the militant group during the General Assembly’s "emergency issues" session. During the session, the council also discussed effective ways of tackling the Iraqi and Syrian crisis.

According to the resolution, ISIL and other similar militant organizations continue to damage religious and ethnic minority communities in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria where the situation is becoming more desperate daily. The resolution, prepared by the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, underlined the deepening humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq and urged countries, especially neighboring states, to send more humanitarian aid to refugee camps and to support efforts to establish stability in those conflict areas.

PACE also drew attention to the number of young people who participated in ISIL from Europe which number approximately three thousand. The resolution said that the countries need to identify ISIL’s financial resources and to try to stop their funding.

ISIL has captured large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, declaring what it calls a cross-border Islamic ‘caliphate,’ killing thousands and displacing millions in the two countries.

It has also posted graphic online videos of mass executions, as well as the beheadings of Western hostages.
