ALEPPO, Syria

At least 23 civilians have been killed after Syrian army helicopters attacked areas in Aleppo under Syrian opposition control with barrel bombs, according to the Syrian civil defense team.

The helicopters bombed the Haydariye and al Sheikh Fares regions in Aleppo on Wednesday, the team said.

Several people were injured in the attacks and three cars, a workplace and two shops were destroyed, the team added.

The wounded people were taken to the Sahra hospital.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March, 2011.

Last month, the Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that more than 133,000 people had been killed in regime attacks.

A recent UN report said more than 191,000 people were believed to have been killed in the country.
