Statistical data on the life expectancy of Turkish people was announced by Turkey's statistical authority, Turkstat for the first time in its history in a report released on Wednesday.

“This is the first time in Turkey that specific life expectancy tables at both the country and province level from administrative registers have been officially produced and announced publicly,” the report said.

The life expectancy at birth in Turkey is calculated at 76.3 years for men and 79.4 years for women, showing women live approximately 5.7 years longer than men.

Life expectancy at birth is deemed as an important indicator to assess the socio-economic status of the public and the quality of life and mortality ratio.

The average life expectancy at birth within the European Union (EU) currently stands at 80.3 years, roughly four years above Turkey’s average life expectancy.
