Germany's Turks honor AA over child welfare reports

BERLIN

A Berlin-based Turkish non-governmental organization has presented an award to Anadolu Agency in recognition of its efforts to raise awareness of the plight of children taken away from their parents and given protection by youth offices in Germany.

The award was presented on Tuesday by the Umut Yildizi Association in recognition of reportage carried out by Anadolu Agency (AA) on the work of youth offices in Germany which, assisted by Turkish organizations, provide protection for Turkish children who have been subjected to abuse by their families or left to survive alone on the streets.

Speaking during a visit to AA's office in Berlin, chairman of the Umut Yildizi Association Kamil Altay said: "We are happy to see AA side with us with its contributions.

"Anadolu Agency is attaching value to these children."

Altay praised the agency for its awareness-raising stories, which were produced after AA reporters examined the case histories of some of the neglected children.

Anadolu Agency had highlighted the plight of children who had been placed into care taken among Turkish and German politicians, said Altay.

Altay said the stories had inspired families to volunteer to foster the children and help them grow within their own culture.

"We visited the agency to award it for its contribution and efforts in supporting us," Altay added.
