BAMAKO
At least 16 miners were killed in the collapse of a gold mine in Niaouleni in southwestern Mali, the country's Ministry of Mines said late Tuesday.
"An initial toll showed that 16 people –10 Guineans and six Malians - were killed," the statement said.
"Eight miners were also injured, including one in a serious condition," it added.
The ministry blamed the incident on the non-observance of a ministerial order that prohibits any gold mining activity during the winter months in Mali from May to October of each year.
