JERUSALEM

An elite Israeli police force tasked with fighting terrorism will be authorized to operate outside Israel's border, an Israeli daily reported Tuesday.

According to Haaretz, the Yamam unit will be expanded to include 100 more members.

The daily quoted some unnamed Israeli officials as saying that they had hopes that the expansion of the unit would help it get ready for a situation when Israel faces simultaneous incidents on more than one front.

According to Haaretz, among the scenarios is to get the taskforce face "terrorist" infiltrations along Israel's southern and northern borders.

Yamam unit is believed to be behind the assassination and arrest of "wanted" people in the Palestinian territories.
